1999 Supreme Jackson Pollock Grey Box Logo Tee
In 1999 Supreme brought out one of their most famous, renowned and iconic box logo tees ever. The Jackson Pollock Box Logo. Named after famous Abstract expressionism painter Jackson Pollock - this tee features the signature ‘drip painting’ pattern he became world-famous for. The exact paint splatter seen on the shirt is resembling of the “Convergence” (1952) Pollock. This artwork was made during the Cold War between the USA and Russia, indicating freedom of speech during a moment of crisis. The Art drew the CIA’s attention : they described the Art as the polar opposite of social realism. As a result of this, the CIA secretly pumped funds into the abstract Artist in an attempt to make American freedom and expression art popular in contrast to rigid Soviet art. Despite all the success, the famous painter known for his reclusive personality struggled with alcoholism. In 1956 Jackson Pollock died in an alcohol-related car crash. Pollock died early at 44. Over four decades later in 1999, Supreme released a small collection of box logo t-shirts adopting the famous Jackson Pollock pattern. It is currently one of the hardest pieces to find due to age, scarcity, and the immense popularity. Given the sheer age and cultural prominence, a piece like this can be regarded as modern-day art, while it was merely a Skate Tee at the inception of the piece over 20 years ago.
