Comme des Garçons is Japanese fashion label founded by Rei Kawakubo in Paris. The label began in 1969 and the company Comme des Garçons was founded in 1973. The name is french for "like boys" and is a reference to a 1962 Françoise Hardy song "Tous les garçons et les filles". The label was founded in Tokyo and gained success early on during the 1970's. In the 1980's the style was often times associated with Punk oriented style elements. The collections received public criticism by the press during this time. The same style elements carried them through the 1990's as CDG became a true staple amongst high end fashion. Nowadays Comme des Garçons is known as an iconic brand merging Japanese style with high end fashion house aesthetics.
