Nike SB Dunk Low Freddy Krueger
In 2007 Nike prepared a special Halloween themed sneaker release with 3 pairs all referencing horror classics. Two of them came out, one of them never did. Inspired by the 1984 classic “A Nightmare on Elm Street” by Wes Craven Nike designed a SB Dunk Low adopting the red and green colour theme referencing the famous sweater worn by Freddy Krueger in addition to a silver leather swoosh signifying Krueger’s razored gloves. This sneaker was highly anticipated by fans when it was first announced, however a last minute cease and desist from new line cinema prevented this sneaker from releasing. Charging Nike with copyright infringement they would send out a cease and desist ordering the instant removal of all remaining pairs. A few of the sneakers were already sent out to retailers, it is rumoured that a small amount were recovered in a retailer in Mexcico making its way into collectors hands before being pulled back by Nike. The shoes were burnt by Nike to prevent a lawsuit, luckily some of them were saved last minute by a savy Nike employee and smuggled outside of the factory. It was such a close call that some of these pairs even have oil stains on them right before they were supposed to be burned. It is rumoured that only 30 pairs were saved in total making this sneaker one of the most rare sneakers ever. 16 years later this piece stands at the pinaccle of the sneaker world as the greatest sneaker that never was.
